Skills
Over the last 15+ years I have had incredible opportunities to learn the numerous skills needed to be successful in marketing. Here are a few examples.
Building Relationships
I enjoy finding opportunities to build relationships and collaborate with others. I do this through active listening, common humanity and taking a genuine interest. I love hearing people’s stories and what makes them special.
Flexibilty
I pride myself in my ability to quickly pivot and try a new solution when I find that something is no longer working. I learned throughout my career that the more I held onto my orginal ideas that no longer worked, the more I held myself back from finding the better solution. Since I’ve changed my way of thinking on this, I’ve had so much more success and in way less time.
Desire to Learn and Improve
I absolutely love to learn new skills and build upon my knowledge. I often read books and listen to podcasts on various subjects such as marketing, communication, organization and self-improvement. I love to multi-task and listen to the latest social media trends while doing my dishes!
Identifying opportunities
Using a combination of critical and creative thinking allows me to see opportunities that others sometimes miss. I often see potential for partnerships, collaborations and revenue streams.
While growing my business I continued to find sales opportunities. I taught a phone photography class, advertised local businesses, collaborated with other entrepreneurs, sold ad space and used affiliate links and unique promo codes. Lastly, I worked with small businesses as a marketing consultant.
Communication and Presentation Skills
I’ve continuously worked on my ability to communicate ideas and present them to others. I’ve had the opportunity to present to clients, speak LIVE on the news, teach an online class, and speak at engagements. The past year and a half I’ve taken classes and workshops at Westside Improv to learn how to think quickly, collaborate and be more creative. The most important skill I continue to improve on is my vulnerability. There is so much power that comes from vulnerability (thanks Brene Brown!)
I’ve had some great improv shows and others that were terrible! (I can’t even watch the video of my first improv performance) but I continue to go back week after week to do it all over again, and that is my idea of success!
Storytelling and Creative Writing
I’ve always taken an interest in other’s stories. I love to learn about people and what is important to them. This made creating video documentaries such a fun opportunity for a business.
After creating my own unique “Wedding Biography” and posting it on Youtube, I started to receive message upon message from people asking if I could make a video for their wedding, retirement party, or anniversary. That is when I saw the opportunity to create a business and I started “Simply Unique Video.” For years I worked with people all over the globe to tell their unique stories.
